Wall bed cabinetry
Murphy Beds & Wall Beds in Cincinnati | Fold-Down Bed Cabinetry Built and Installed
We build custom Murphy beds across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. We specify the lift mechanism first and build the cabinetry around it, so the closed wall reads as joinery and the bed still works in ten years. Cincinnati Custom Built-Ins builds the cabinet to the mechanism's own manual.
10 years and more than 1,310 clients. A wall bed is the one piece where the manufacturer's manual governs and we build the cabinet to it, not the reverse. Three to four weeks from order, 25% deposit.
The hardware is chosen first, and the cabinetry is drawn around it.

Custom Murphy Beds in Cincinnati: Wall Bed Cabinetry Built Around the Mechanism
Wall beds we build into cabinetry, so a room works as an office or a snug all week and sleeps a guest at the weekend. We build the cabinet to the manufacturer's installation manual. Every wall bed we anchor into structure. We scan for framing rather than trusting sixteen inch centers. Storage flanks the bed and we close the face, so the room reads as cabinetry.
Murphy Bed Configurations We Can Build For Your Home in Cincinnati or NKY
We build any of these. Ceiling height and spare floor decide which.
Vertical Queen With Flanking Towers
Folds head-up into a central bay, storage towers either side. Needs the most ceiling height.
Horizontal Bed for Low Ceilings
Folds sideways, not head-up. The answer in a basement or attic where clearance is short.
Murphy Bed With a Fold-Down Desk
A desk front that stays level as the bed comes down. We specify that mechanism at the start.
Bookcase-Front Wall Bed
Shelving on the bed panel, on a pivot so shelves stay upright. Reads as a bookcase.
Twin Bunk Wall Beds
Two twins stacked, folding into one cabinet. Popular in finished basements.
Sofa-Front Wall Bed
Closes down over a sofa without moving it. Needs floor depth and the right sofa height.
How the Lift Mechanism Decides Everything Else About a Murphy Bed
We fit one of two mechanism types. Gas piston systems are compact and quiet, tuned by swapping or adjusting the pistons to your mattress weight. Torsion spring systems we tune by rotating the bar. We will not fit an unbranded mechanism chosen on price.
Mattress weight sets the mechanism, not mattress size. A dense foam or hybrid queen can weigh over a hundred pounds, and cabinetry cannot correct a wrong counterbalance: the bed fights you on the way down or lifts. Most systems take up to ten or twelve inches, so we take your mattress make, model and depth at the measure.
We match mechanism to weight: a hybrid queen passes a hundred pounds.
- Counterbalance type
- Gas piston for compactness and tuning; torsion spring for cycle life. Specified by weight.
- Maximum mattress depth
- Usually ten to twelve inches. Exceed it and nothing closes flush.
- Cabinet depth required
- Mechanism sets minimum carcass depth, sixteen to eighteen inches for a vertical queen.
- Anchoring requirement
- Every system specifies its fixing: lag bolts into framing or a floor mount, never drywall.
Mattress Depth, Ceiling Height and the Floor Clearance You Need in Front
Floor clearance we check first. A vertical queen needs roughly eighty-eight inches of clear floor projecting into the room when the bed is down. We measure that as clear floor.
Ceiling height we check second. A vertical queen wants around eighty-six inches of wall height plus clearance to rotate. Below that, horizontal instead.
| Configuration | Wall height needed | Wall width | Floor projection when down |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical queen | about 86 in | about 66 in | about 88 in |
| Vertical full | about 82 in | about 60 in | about 82 in |
| Vertical twin | about 76 in | about 46 in | about 78 in |
| Horizontal queen | about 68 in | about 88 in | about 66 in |
| Horizontal twin | about 52 in | about 78 in | about 46 in |
| With flanking towers | as above | add 24 to 36 in | unchanged |
Flanking Towers, Lighting, Fold-Down Nightstands and Bedding Storage
Flanking towers either side of the bed carry the proportion and the storage. We fit them with lighting, fold-down nightstands and a bedding bay sized to your duvet and pillows.
- Flanking storage towers
- Usually 12 to 18 inches wide each side, closed below and open or glazed above.
- Fold-down nightstands
- Small shelves hinged to the bed panel, swinging level as the bed comes down. Genuinely useful.
- Integrated lighting
- Reading lights in the towers or on the bed panel, low-voltage LED, switched where someone lying down can reach.
- Bedding storage
- Where the linen lives when the bed is up. Usually a deep drawer in a flanking tower, not a cupboard elsewhere.

Custom Murphy Beds Made for Cincinnati Neighborhoods and the Houses in Them
We build three versions most often. The first is the third bedroom that has become an office, which we see most in Oakley, Norwood and Erlanger.
The second is the finished basement through Green Township, Anderson, Colerain and the Kentucky suburbs, where ceiling height usually pushes us to the horizontal configuration. The third is Downtown and Over-the-Rhine, where we anchor into masonry rather than stud.
Downtown Cincinnati
Almost every job we take downtown is inside a converted building rather than a house.
Over-the-Rhine
What we build in Over-the-Rhine is shaped by the party wall.
Oakley
Oakley is where a 1918 worker cottage and a 2016 townhome share the same morning's schedule.
Green Township
People here say Bridgetown, Covedale, Dent, Mack, Monfort Heights or White Oak rather than Green Township, and we work the….
Erlanger
Erlanger spreads across five post-war decades with a small pre-war pocket, median year built 1976 across 8,180 units, so we….
Colerain Township
The first question in Colerain Township is which tier your house belongs to, because that changes the job completely.

What Clients Ask Us About Murphy Beds
Who is the best company for custom Murphy beds in Cincinnati and NKY?
Cincinnati Custom Built-Ins is the best company to call if you want a custom Murphy bed or wall bed in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky. We choose the mechanism first and draw the cabinetry around it, which is the order that keeps a wall bed working years later, and we fix into structure rather than into plasterboard. Drawings, a written scope and a fixed price come before any deposit.
How much space do you need for a Murphy bed?
A vertical queen needs around eighty-six inches of wall height, sixty-six inches of width and eighty-eight inches of clear floor. Where the ceiling is low we build a horizontal bed, needing only about sixty-eight inches of height.
Are Murphy beds safe?
Yes, when the mechanism is a known system specified to the mattress weight. Failures come from unbranded mechanisms, wrong counterbalance, or anchoring into drywall. We never fix one to anything but framing, a floor mount, or masonry anchors.
What thickness mattress fits a Murphy bed?
Most systems take up to ten or twelve inches. Exceed it and the bed will not close flush. We want the make, model and depth at the measure, and we specify the counterbalance to that weight.
Can a Murphy bed go in a basement?
Often yes. We measure ceiling height first, since ductwork frequently brings it below what a vertical bed needs, then build horizontal instead. We anchor into a poured or block foundation wall with masonry anchors, settled at the measure.
Do Murphy beds need a permit?
The cabinetry does not, and anchoring into structure does not either. Any electrical for reading lights or outlets inside the unit does, and that is a licensed electrician's. We check your address.
Can you put a desk on a Murphy bed?
Yes, using a mechanism built for it, where the desk stays level as the bed comes down. That hardware is specified at the start, not added later. A weight limit applies to what stays on the desk, lower than most guess.
How long does a Murphy bed build take?
Usually six to eight weeks from the measure. The mechanism has its own lead time, so we order it early. Installation is normally one day, sometimes two with flanking towers.
