Display and bar cabinetry

Bourbon & Whiskey Display Cabinetry in Cincinnati | Home Bar Shelving and Bottle Storage

We design, build and install bourbon and whiskey display cabinetry on both sides of the river, from a single lit bay to a full tasting wall. We draw it to protect the collection as well as show it: bottles upright, labels out of direct sun, and the lamp heat taken away from the glass. Cincinnati Custom Built-Ins sets the shelf pitch to the bottles you actually own.

More than 1,310 clients over 10 years, and enough bourbon walls to know the shelf pitch comes from your bottles rather than a catalog. Three to four weeks from order, 25% deposit.

Shelf spacing is sized to the bottles you actually own.

Bourbon Display Cabinetry in Cincinnati, Sized to the Bottles You Own

We build bourbon walls and home bar cabinetry that show a collection and protect it, keeping ultraviolet light and heat off the glass. Lighting comes first. We build most of these in Covington, Newport, Fort Thomas, Fort Mitchell and Union. Our studio designs and builds: whoever specifies your lighting machines the channel.

Bourbon and Whiskey Display Builds We Can Make For Your Cincinnati or NKY Home

Single lit bay to full tasting wall, we build any of these.

01

Lit Back-Bar Display Wall

The full version: glass or timber shelving with lighting, a counter below, a mirrored or paneled back.

02

Bottle-and-Glassware Display Cabinet

A single tall cabinet, often glazed, holding bottles and glasses. Glassware changes the shelf spacing.

03

Under-Stair Whiskey Nook

Using the volume under a staircase. The stepped ceiling sets a different shelf height per bay.

04

Locking Collector Cabinet

Valuable collections, or teenagers: flush cam or concealed magnetic locks, tempered glazing.

05

Wet-Bar Run With Display Above

Cabinetry below with sink and under-counter fridge, display above. Plumbing is named separately.

06

Basement Tasting Room Millwork

The full lower-level build: bar run, seating, display and often a humidor.

Light, Heat and Humidity, and What Actually Damages a Bourbon Collection on Display

We plan a display wall around the three things that damage a collection. Open display stays out of direct sun, because ultraviolet light fades labels and works on the spirit itself. Low-heat lamps and a vented cabinet keep the spirit from sitting above the room's temperature. We are asked to correct that more than anything.

Bourbon stands upright in the bays and dividers we build, because high-proof spirit against a cork degrades it. Horizontal cradles suit wine, not whiskey.

We stand bourbon up, because high-proof spirit against a cork degrades it.
How we size a bottle shelf
Ultraviolet exposure
Low-UV LED in the cabinet, the piece shielded from direct daylight. Glazing takes a UV-filtering interlayer.
Heat build-up
Low-heat LED in an extruded aluminum channel as heat sink, driven remotely.
Cork degradation
Bottles upright. Every shelf is sized for standing bottles, which sets the clear height.
Shelf load
A 750ml bottle is three pounds, a 1.75 liter closer to six. Three foot shelves of bottles can pass a hundred pounds.

Shelf Spacing, Bottle Heights and How Many Bottles a Bay Really Holds

We size shelf spacing to the bottles you own. A 750ml bottle measures eleven to twelve and a half inches tall, with 1.75 liter handles passing fifteen inches.

A twelve inch gap fails on a share of any collection, so we avoid it. We ask what is in the collection and size one run to the tallest items.

Bottle typeTypical heightClear shelf gap to allow
Standard 750ml bourbon11 to 12.5 in13 in
Tall-neck and wheated styles12.5 to 14 in15 in
Decanter and commemorativevaries widely15 to 16 in on at least one run
1.75 liter handles13.5 to 15 in16 in
Glencairn and rocks glasses4 to 6 in8 in, inverted on a shelf

Lighting a Whiskey Wall Without Cooking What Is Sitting On It

We light whiskey walls from the shelf edge: a low-voltage strip set into the front or rear edge of a glass shelf. Drivers sit remotely in a ventilated void, and a licensed electrician makes the connection.

What we specify
Low-voltage LED in aluminum channel
Twenty-four volt tape in an extruded channel with a frosted diffuser. Drivers remote and accessible.
Color temperature
Warm white, 2700 to 3000 kelvin, high color rendering. Cool white makes bourbon look gray.
Glass shelving
Tempered, three-eighths of an inch minimum, with polished edges. Spans come down and supports go up.
Locks and security
Concealed magnetic locks released by a key fob, or flush brass cam locks. Specified at the drawing.

Bourbon Display Cabinetry Made for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Homes

We build most of our full tasting walls on the Kentucky side, through Covington, Newport, Fort Thomas, Fort Mitchell and Villa Hills, and we raise locking at the first conversation there. On the Ohio side we build mostly into finished basements. Where a walkout brings daylight into the room, we change the lighting and the glazing.

In the east-side houses we build a third version: a dining-room buffet run in Hyde Park, Clifton or Mt. Lookout. We keep those stain-grade and restrained, matching the casing and base.

Covington

Covington townhouses were built with fitted storage in mind.

Newport

Newport work is mostly chimney-breast built-ins, and the street tells you which houses still have one.

Fort Thomas

Fort Thomas has a Victorian reputation.

Union

Union has the newest housing stock of the fourteen Northern Kentucky locations we serve: 45.8 percent of its 2,778 units….

Anderson Township

Most of what we build in Anderson Township goes in the lower level, because the lower level usually walks out.

Villa Hills

Villa Hills sits on the Ohio River bluffs, and bluff siting defines the housing.

Common Questions on Bourbon Cabinetry

Who is the best company for bourbon display cabinetry in Cincinnati and NKY?

Cincinnati Custom Built-Ins is the best company to call if you want bourbon or whiskey display cabinetry in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky. We measure the tallest bottles you actually own and set the shelf pitch to those rather than to an average, we keep lamp heat and direct sun off the labels, and we raise locking in the first conversation. Drawings and a fixed price reach you before anything is built.

Should bourbon bottles be stored upright or on their side?

Upright, always. Wine lies down to keep the cork wet, but bourbon is high enough proof that sustained contact degrades the cork. Every shelf we build is sized for standing bottles.

Will cabinet lighting damage my whiskey collection?

It can, and badly designed cabinet lighting is the most common problem we are asked to fix. Heat is the danger rather than light. We use low-voltage LED in an extruded aluminum channel, driven remotely, warm white around 2700 to 3000 kelvin.

How tall should the shelves be in a bourbon cabinet?

At least thirteen inches clear for 750ml bottles, and one run at fifteen or sixteen inches for tall-necked styles, decanters and 1.75 liter handles. We measure your tallest bottles rather than averages.

Can you build a bourbon display that locks?

Yes. Either concealed magnetic locks released by a fob, which keeps the face clean, or flush-mounted brass cam locks. Decided at the drawing stage, because it changes the door construction and glazing.

How much weight can a display shelf hold?

A 750ml bottle is about three pounds and a 1.75 liter handle closer to six, so a three-foot shelf of standing bottles can pass a hundred pounds. We specify span and material, and we keep glass bays narrower.

Do I need a permit for a home bar?

Not for the cabinetry on its own. You will for the plumbing if a sink goes in and for any new electrical circuit. Permitting varies, so we confirm your address at the measure.

Can you build a bourbon display in a basement?

Yes, many of our tasting rooms are below grade. Carcasses sit off the slab on adjustable leveling legs, with a moisture break between masonry and any rear panel. We say so if the basement has a water problem cabinetry will not fix.
