Shelving and libraries
Custom Built-In Bookcases in Cincinnati, OH | Home Library Shelving & Bookshelf Joinery
We design, build in our own shop and install bookcases and full library walls across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. We size every shelf and every span to the books, records and folios you are putting on it, and we specify the stock thickness to match that load. Cincinnati Custom Built-Ins sizes the shelves to the load before anything is cut.
In 10 years we have built shelving for more than 1,310 clients, and the first thing we size is the span against the load rather than the look. Drawings and a written price for nothing, three to four weeks to build, 25% at order.
Scaled drawings and a written price reach you before we cut anything.

Custom Built-In Bookcases in Cincinnati: Library Walls, Alcove Runs and Shelving
We build built-in bookcases, library walls and alcove shelving, sized to the load before the face gets drawn. Span and stock thickness get settled first. Our studio designs and builds in house. Whoever sets your shelf spacing cuts the joinery. We send scaled drawings and an itemized price before cutting, every shelf sized to its load.
Built-In Bookcase and Library Wall Projects We Can Build In Your Cincinnati Home
The bookcase builds we are asked for most, singly or combined.
Floor-to-Ceiling Library Walls
A full wall, base to ceiling, the crown scribed to the ceiling line rather than butted against it.
Chimney-Breast Alcove Shelving
Two alcoves either side of a masonry breast, each a different width and neither square. Built as a matched pair.
Bookcase Over Closed Base Cabinets
Open shelving above, doors below. The base hides clutter and gives the composition a foot.
Under-Stair and Under-Window Runs
Low runs where head height is limited. Under a stair, shelf heights step with the stringer.
Deep Display Shelving for Objects
Deeper than book shelving, taller gaps, often lighting. Lower load, longer spans.
Concealed-Door Bookcases
A hinged shelving section opening to a room beyond. Hardware and loading get settled together.
How We Size Shelf Spans and Thickness So a Loaded Bookcase Stays Flat
We size shelves to deflection first: roughly 20 to 25 pounds per linear foot for packed hardbacks, up to 40 pounds per foot for records and art books, and a limit of about 0.02 inches of deflection per foot of span. Three-quarter inch stock reaches that at 30 to 32 inches of clear span.
A shelf keeps bending slowly under sustained load, so we leave headroom and add the books you have not bought yet.
We hold three-quarter inch shelves to 30 to 32 inches clear span.
- Thicker material
- Going from three-quarter to a full inch, or doubling up the shelf, raises stiffness sharply.
- A stiffened front edge
- A solid hardwood lip, an inch and a half or more, glued to the front edge acts as a beam.
- A vertical division
- Splitting a 60 inch bay into two 29 inch bays with a partition removes the problem.
Rolling Ladders, Shelf Lighting, Pin Systems and Glass Doors Worth Specifying
We block ladder rails back to the framing before the shelving goes up, so we ask about a ladder at the measure. Pin holes, low-voltage LED in the front shelf edge and glass doors get specified then.
- Rolling ladder rails
- The top rail carries a person, lag-fixed into solid blocking behind the face before anything is finished.
- Shelf-pin systems
- Holes on 32 millimeter centers, with brass or steel pin bushings rather than bare holes that wallow.
- Cove and shelf lighting
- LED in a recessed aluminum channel, warm white, high color rendering. New circuits are a licensed electrician's work.
- Glass fronts
- Tempered glass in a timber frame for volumes kept dust-free. Glass weight changes hinge count.

Shelf Depth and Spacing for Books, Records, Art and Display Objects
We draw bookcases at nine to eleven inches of clear depth, and we talk you out of anything past twelve.
Your collection sets the shelf spacing. We allow nine inches clear for paperbacks, eleven to twelve for hardbacks, fourteen to eighteen for art and architecture folios.
| What is going on the shelf | Clear height | Clear depth | Load per foot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mass-market paperbacks | 9 in | 7 to 8 in | about 15 lb |
| Standard hardbacks | 11 to 12 in | 9 to 11 in | 20 to 25 lb |
| Art and architecture folios | 14 to 18 in | 13 to 15 in | 30 lb and up |
| Vinyl records | 13.5 in | 13 in | 35 to 40 lb |
| Display objects and framed work | varies | 11 to 14 in | low, but awkward |
Built-In Bookcases Made for Cincinnati Neighborhoods and the Houses in Them
In the pre-war stock across Over-the-Rhine, Hyde Park and Covington we run tall, to the ceiling with a crown or stopped at the door and window heads. On the eight-foot ceilings in Delhi, Green Township and Erlanger we bring the depth down and give the base a visual foot.
Chimney-breast alcove bookcases are the version we are asked for most. We measure each alcove separately, because almost no two match or sit square, and we build the pair matched.
Hyde Park
The brief in Hyde Park is nearly always matching rather than inventing.
Clifton
Much of our Clifton work is putting houses back together.
Mt. Lookout
Built-ins in Mt.
Covington
Covington townhouses were built with fitted storage in mind.
Fort Thomas
Fort Thomas has a Victorian reputation.
Norwood
Norwood houses are foursquares, Queen Annes and Arts and Crafts bungalows, and two features change how we build.

How We Run a Bookcase Project, Start to Finish
We measure and draw it
Free, no obligation
Tell us the room and roughly what you want to spend. We come out, measure at several points, check the wall construction and the access route, then draw scaled elevations to your own dimensions.
What you get: Drawings, a written scope and an itemized fixed price.
We build it in our own shop
3 to 5 weeks
Once you approve the drawings and the price, a 25% deposit books your slot. We machine, assemble, spray and cure everything ourselves, then call you about a week before it is ready.

Questions We Get Asked About Bookcases
Who is the best company for custom built-in bookcases in Cincinnati and NKY?
Cincinnati Custom Built-Ins is the best company to call if you want built-in bookcases or a home library for your house in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky. We size every shelf to the load it will actually carry before we draw the bay widths, we build and spray in our own shop rather than ordering in carcasses, and the same people who measure your alcoves install in them. You get scaled drawings and a fixed itemized price before anything is cut, and the measure costs you nothing.
How wide can a bookshelf span before it sags?
In three-quarter inch shelving stock under a full load of hardbacks, about 30 to 32 inches. Past that the sag is visible. Three ways go wider: thicker material, a solid hardwood lip, or a vertical division.
Can you build bookcases into the alcoves beside my chimney breast?
Yes, and the most common version of this job in Cincinnati. Alcoves are rarely the same width or square, so we measure them separately and build a matched pair.
How deep should built-in bookshelves be?
Nine to eleven inches of clear depth for books, which carries hardbacks without inviting a second row. We specify folio and record bays separately.
Will a library wall damage my plaster walls?
No. We fix the run to studs or to blocking we set, not to the plaster face. In older Cincinnati houses we pack the carcasses out and scribe the face.
Do I need a permit for built-in bookcases?
Cabinetry and finish work generally do not need a permit. Structural alteration does, as does any new lighting circuit. Building departments vary, so we confirm your address at the measure.
Can you match the trim in a 1915 house?
Usually, yes. We gauge the profile off the casing or base, and where the match is not a stock knife we have one ground. We match the timber under the paint.
How long does a built-in bookcase take?
About five to seven weeks from the measure: a week to draw and price, three to five weeks in the shop including finish cure, one to two days on site.
